The stock market crashed October 29, 1929. Our nation fell into the Great Depression.
In 1930 the Walther Leaguers of Holy Cross, Trinity and Bethlehem canvassed the southeastern part of Saginaw. The results of more than 2,000 calls showed that there were unchurched families and it was time to establish a mission congregation in that area.
Property was purchased on Lamson Street near the Saginaw County Fair Grounds. St. Lorenz, Frankenmuth donated one of its branch schools, the Hoffman School, for the first church building. Redeemer Lutheran Church had begun. A church was built and the Christian Day School was built across the street.
Even though it was during the height of the Depression and World War II was nearing. Redeemer grew and flourished for some time.
One of the early teachers, Mr. Ernest Brandt, helped to organize many activities. His favorite was the Saginaw Lutheran Schools Spelling Bee, which continues to this day.
A beautiful new church was built adjacent to the old structure. Changes in the neighborhood brought about the closing of the day school.
A Spanish Mission began with a Spanish-speaking pastor. This mission continued for some time. The vacant school building was rented to an academy and classes were held by this branch of the Saginaw City Schools.
At the closing of this academy, the school building was completely renovated in preparation for opening a child care facility. The building was readied, but plans did not materialize for child care.
In December 2004, near Christmas, Redeemer Church was destroyed by fire. The structure was a complete loss.
As reconstruction and renovation took place, the old church building was prepared to be used again as the worship area. A new parish hall was constructed where the church had stood.
In 2008, the school building was sold and is used for adult education classes.
Redeemer congregation was famous for the Friday Fish Frys they had for many years.
Presently, they are served by an Intentional Interim Pastor, Stephen Schilke. Services are held on Sundays and also on Wednesday evening.
The neighborhood, the buildings and the membership have changed throughout the years.
